spring skin care: the face

With the temperature rising and summer around the corner, skin care is starting to take a major priority in our lives once again. No longer hidden under the layers of cold weather protection, a solid skin care routine will help us look and feel good, inside and out! All this week on In A Sequoia, we'll be talking skin, skin, skin. Welcome to the first ever skin care week!

I wanted to start the week by talking about my all time favourite products for my face. In the no make-up, un-Photoshopped photo above, you can see my skin can be very sensitive - and this was on a good day! Taking time to really nourish my face is so important for my long-term skin health, yet sadly I only started to realize it this year. After a lot of research and cautious purchasing, there are a handful of products that stole my heart. Particularly from Eminence Handmade Organic Skincare. I love this handmade, organic line full of natural products.

The night routine is the most important in my opinion. So much healing happens when you sleep, so the care you put into your face before bed is what really sets you up for success. I start with my Eminence Monoi Age Corrective Exfoliating Cleanser. I trust this cleanser to remove my daily make-up and gently exfoliate away the dead skin that builds up on my face. Plus, the monoi oil hydrates and firms my skin. I always mix in a little water with my cleanser and let it sit on my face just a little bit to work some extra magic.

After rinsing, I apply four drops of Eminence Stone Crop Serum. Antioxidents are my favourite tool in skin care and this serum is full of them! Just this little touch of serum not only helps hydrate my face, but reduces the appearance of my allergy scaring and blotches. This was the first product I ever visibly noticed an impact in evening out my skin tone. But my favourite Eminence product of all time? Their Stone Crop Whip Moisturizer. Stone Crop is a natural succulent the appearance of irritation, aka all the red spots I get due to sensitive skin! I always emulsify my moisturizer with a little bit of water to extend the lifetime of my product and not overdo it! As a bonus, this moisturizer leaves my skin smelling just as amazing as it feels.

I used to have a problem with over-cleansing. This not only effected my skin, but my wallet too. So I cut out cleansing in the morning. Instead, I have a two-step morning routine. I start with Beauty Control Spa Solutions Eye Roller. Dark circles have always lived under my eyes, and this helps control them. Sadly, I have little faith I'll ever fully remove them without dropping some major dollars. Then I moisturize with my Stone Crop Whip Moisturizer. Eat some breakfast, pick out what to wear, then follow up with a little bit of SPF 30 Foundation.

Now & Then Special Treatments

There are two masques I use once-a-week, depending on what my skin goal is in the moment. For a deep moisturizing treatment to help relieve tired looking skin, I turn to Dermalogica's Skin Hydrating Masque. You can bet I used this baby after The Mindful Pop-Up! It smells weird, but it works. Totally worth it. If I'm looking to lighten and brighten my skin, also known as reduce the appearance of my scars, I use the magic blue bottle in the photo below. It's a creepy black, thick masque I peel off afterward. It was gifted to me and I really don't know much about it. But once in a while, I really like to use it.

In my 24 years of life, these are the only products I have ever dedicated myself to and used consistently. I use them because I trust them and they work well with my sensitive, sometimes dry skin. Their mostly packed full of organic, good for you ingredients. When developing your own skin-care routine, be sure to research what products are going to work well with your skin. Head to a spa you know and trust (note: not a drugstore!) and talk to one of the aestheticians. Most times they are more than happy to help you discover what products are best for your skin goals!
